6/12/2023 0 Comments Rf kuang the poppy warIt had a solid plot and a wonderful narrative. What really impressed me the most about the Poppy War was its ability to hold my attention for long periods of time and nearly decimating my urge to check my phone every once in awhile. Her story is not an easy one and is filled with a lot of pain, disappointment and sacrifice. It all begins with Rin getting admitted into the top academy in the country and moves on to how she grew to become a superior entity capable of changing the world. The Poppy War by RF Kuang is an Asian – Military Fantasy novel that serves as a brilliant introduction to a 3 – part book series that is heavily inspired by China and a lot of its history. I have been waiting to read this series for a while now and when the third book released officially, I got the trilogy from Books Trunk, met a few people, and went on a reading spree. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Felix bambiThe English translation actually tones down Salten’s anthropomorphism in places and changes its focus in others, thus opening the possibility for the story to be understood less as a human story about persecution, expulsion or assimilation and more as an animal story conveying a strong message about the protection of animals and the necessity of conservation. Nonetheless, the translation became enormously popular: a foreword by the famous writer John Galsworthy, reviews in the New York Times and other newspapers, and the selection of Bambi by the Book of the Month Club lent the translation legitimacy.Īs Sabine Strümper-Krobb points out in her astute essay with the unusual title “‘I Particularly Recommend It to Sportsmen,’ Bambi in America: The Rewriting of Felix Salten’s Bambi”: Moreover, he mistranslates many German idioms, omits phrases, and does not convey Salten’s profound personal and philosophical dilemma. Consequently, his translation is filled with all sorts of errors and fails to capture Salten’s unusual Viennese style of writing and anthropomorphism. Chambers had a limited understanding of Austrian German and spent little time in Austria. One of the reasons Felix Salten had become famous was the translation of Bambi into English in 1928 by the American writer Whittaker Chambers (who, decades later, was revealed to be a communist spy). 6/12/2023 0 Comments Big little lies author moriartyEverything resolves very tidily and satisfyingly. There is lots of relatable mommy content but I am not a mother so I rolled my eyes at all the gilded mother suffering (not the abuse/sexual violence obviously, just the harried mom stuff). You can absolutely see the structure and how the plot was assembled and what each character is supposed to do. Also, this book is brutally well written. I wish I could just turn it off and enjoy froth for froth’s sake. Again, every book doesn’t need to be everything buuuuut, I guess only white people go to the elementary school at the center of this narrative which, given Sydney’s reasonably diverse population speaks to how segregated the world is. Also, it just needs to be said, this is a very white book. But at the same time, some of what this book deals with is serious and so it makes the frothiness aggravating at times. Not every book needs to carry the weight of the world. Yes, it deals with domestic violence and sexual assault and the pressures and pettiness of white middle class and upper class womanhood when it comes to their social lives and their children and so on, but everything here is easy, frothy. It’s certainly readable and hard to put down. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Harry potter minalima azkabanJim Kay won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2012 for his illustrations in A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. The Critique of Practical Reason is the second of Immanuel Kant's three critiques and it deals with Kant's own moral philosophy and his views on free will. Here Kant redefines reason and gives us the tools to understand reason on two levels: the empirical and the metaphysical. Kant's influence on modern perception of reason cannot be over estimated. The Critique of Pure Reason is one of the most influential philosophy books of all times. The Critique of Pure Reason, The Critique of Practical Reason, and The Critique of Judgement. Collected in this 3-in-one omnibus edition are Kant's ground breaking critiques. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Lorraine heath always to rememberPublishers Weekly says she is a master of her craft. She has since moved on to writing about sexy cowboys and dashing English lords-sometimes, cleverly, within the same book. Lorraine Heath wrote her first story at seven, and it involved a fisherman who fell in love with a mermaid. I mean to say, when you stand at the edge of the ocean it is hard to understand all of the depth and life and mystery that it holds. I do not mean to be rude, in stating that I originally struggled to enter this collection. Voyage of the Sable Venus demands the reader’s full attention. This collection is not something that can be half listened to at a poetry reading. This collection is not something that you can lazily flip through at a bookstore. I say this because I think that it’s important to note. Again, I was interested in the poems but not exactly sure what all the hype was about. I heard her recite poems from the collection with her former teacher, Yusef Komunyakaa, at New York University. The second time that I encountered Voyage of the Sable Venus was the day after Robin Coste Lewis won the National Book Award. I flipped through the book’s pages, read a couple poems, and then moved on (walking out of the store empty-handed). The first time that I picked up Voyage of the Sable Venus by Robin Coste Lewis was shortly after its release, in a New York City bookstore. ‘Voyage of the Sable Venus’ by Robin Coste Lewis 6/10/2023 0 Comments Ben's Trumpet by Rachel IsadoraShe is often a featured success story in brand communications, most recently for Dell and Microsoft.
